During the week of July 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 31 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

During the week of July 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 31 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, 17.

• Puna, seven.

• South Hilo, five.

• South Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 612 DUI arrests compared with 566 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.1 percent.

There have been 705 major accidents so far this year compared to 755 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.6 percent.

To date, there have been 20 official traffic fatalities, compared to 12 official fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 66.7 percent for fatalities. There also have been four vehicle-related deaths police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
