Honokaa High School announced its tryout dates for three fall sports.
• Football, July 17, 3:30-6 p.m. Meet at the varsity football locker room.
• Girls volleyball, July 31, 3-5.p.m.
Meet at Parks and Recreation Complex Gym.
• Boys/girls cross-country, Aug. 7, 3 p.m.
Meet at V-building locker room.
All interested athletes in grades 9-12 are required to have a completed physical and parent-consent form
Athletes should come dressed to participate. Forms are available at the main office, athletic trainer’s room and the athletic director’s office in the gym.

Golfers earn stipends
Trevor Hirata, a 2016 Waiakea graduate, and 2017 Makua Lani graduate Matthew Rosato each secured three scholarships presented by the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association.
Of the four golfers who will split $12,500 in scholarship funds, Hirata and Rosato were the only to be the recepients of the C. Pardee & Betsy Erdman College Scholarship, the Thos Rohr College Scholarship and the HSJGA College Scholarship.
Kamehameha graduate Kala’i Pomroy earned the Thos Rohr and HSJGA College scholarships.
Vuls honored
University of Hawaii Hilo golfers Andi Igawa and Keely Kitamura were named the Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Athlete team.
Only nine golfers in the Pacific West Conference were named to the squad, and the Vulcans had the second highest representation of student-athletes carrying a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or better in the conference.
Igawa, a junior from Waiakea High School, has a 3.75 GPA in her major of psychology. Kitamura, also a local product from Waiakea, just completed her second full year academically and her first campaign on the golf team. She has a 3.62 GPA in psychology as well.
“Andi and Keely are great role models of what it means to work hard on and off the course,” Vulcans coach Jim DeMello said in a release. “I am proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they represent UH Hilo athletics.”
Top shots
Dana Okazi was the top shot June 25 as B.A.D. Company held a compact sporting clay shoot at the County Trap and Skeet Range.
Following Okazaki (62) in the 100-target shoot were Dexter Egdamin and Neil Arakaki (61) and Ronald Nakamura (58).
The next club event will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 16.
