The Coast Guard suspended its active search Friday for a man who went missing early Monday evening in waters in the vicinity of Kaalualu Bay in Ka‘u.

The Coast Guard suspended its active search Friday for a man who went missing early Monday evening in waters in the vicinity of Kaalualu Bay in Ka‘u.

Shane Romena, 48, of Ocean View remains missing.

“Our sincerest condolences go out to Romena’s family and friends during this difficult time,” said Senior Chief Petty officer Brian Wear. “Suspending a case is never an easy thing to do and it’s something that is handled with the utmost care and consideration. We want to thank our partners at the Hawaii Fire Department for all their assistance during this search.”

Battalion Chief Michael Hayashida said the Hawaii Fire Department has extended its search for a fourth full day Friday at the request of Romena’s family.
