Police charged a 64-year-old Hilo man with an alleged sexual assault in Puna.
Louis Sardis is charged with three counts of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree sexual assault. His bail is set at $64,000 and he’s scheduled for his initial court appearance today.
Shortly before 7 a.m. Friday, officers responded to Melekule street in Puna after receiving a report of suspicious activity within a large van on the roadway. Responding officers found Sardis with an adult woman, both of whom were in the van earlier, according to witnesses.
Police say Sardis was in the act of sexually assaulting the woman when witnesses came upon the vehicle. He was arrested at the scene.
Sardis and the alleged victim are acquainted.
