A 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held June 17 at Pahoa Community Gym.

The entry fee is free in all three divisions (8 and under, 9-10 and 11-12).

Football events at Panaewa

The Hawaii Island Police Activities League, the county and PAC Hawaii Football will sponsor two events from June 16-18.

• On June 16, a combine will be held at Panaewa Park for players entering grades 9-12. Activities include 40 yard dash – hand timed and electronic timed – pro agility shuttle, vertical jump, standing broad jump and power ball toss.

Registration will start at 2 p.m.

• On June 17-18, a 7-on-7 tournament will be held at Panaewa in intermediate (incoming grades 7-9) and high school (incoming 9-12) divisions.

Advanced hoops training

Advanced basketball development training will be held Saturday and June 24 at Kona’s Old Airport’s Kekuaokalani Gym. The year-round program is free to athletes ages 10-17 with basketball experience. Training is from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Trainers are Rory Cabatbat, Cheyenne Meyer, Kailani Jones, Lawrence Kauka, Eddie Hayward, and James “Nish” Nishimura.

Atlanta Braves tryout on Oahu

Atlanta Braves area scout Dan Cox will host an open tryout for the top 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 high school players so the Braves can get an early look at them.

The tryout will be held Sunday, July 23 at Oahu’s Pearl City High School. Check-in is at 10:15 a.m. with an 11 a.m. start.

Tourney honors cancer fight

The fourth annual Battling for Cancer Softball Tournament will be held Aug. 26-27 at Walter Victor Stadium.

The entry fee is $200, and teams must provide their own 14-inch softballs.

Hapuna Rough Water Swim

The Hapuna Rough Water Swim, the second leg of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming summer series, will take place on Sunday, June 18. Along with the 1-mile race, there will also be a 400-meter swim for keiki. To register, visit flpregister.com/277.

Mau fires first hole-in-one

Gordon Mau made a hole-in-one at the 157-yard No. 8 hole with a 6-iron on Tuesday, June 13 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

It was the former Waiakea baseball coach’s first hole-in-one. Witnessing Mau’s ace were Kaylin Takase and Gilbert Madrid.
