Former UH-Hilo golfer Nick Matsushima shot a 1-over-par 72 in the first round of the 109th Manoa Cup on Monday at Oahu Country Club.
Matsushima is seven shot behind leader Zackary Kaneshiro, who fired a 6-under 65. Kaneshiro is a recent Mid-Pacific Institute graduate and will golf at Santa Clara.
Isaiah Kanno, an upcoming Waiakea sophomore and the BIIF champion, carded a 3-over 74 while recent Kamehameha graduate Kala‘i Pomroy shot an 81.
Recent Waiakea graduate Shon Katahira shot an 89. The Oregon State commit had five bogeys, three double bogeys, one triple and a quadruple bogey.
The cut line was 85 to advance to Tuesday’s final round, match play.
Defending champion Brent Grant didn’t enter because he turned pro as well as Waiakea graduate Dalen Yamauchi.
There are no golfers with Big Island ties in the women’s divsion, which is in its second year.
Mari Nishiura is the defending champion and will battle Katrina Huang in match play on Tuesday.
The Manoa Cup first started in 1907 and is the longest running tournament at a single venue west of the Mississippi.
The Manoa Cup has grown to become one of Hawaii’s most prestigious amateur tournaments.
Yanagi gains spot
Pono Yanagi, an upcoming Kamehameha junior, qualified for the Boys Junior PGA Championship, which will be held July 31-Aug. 3 at The Country Club of St. Albans in Missouri.
Yanagi finished runner with a 72-69—141 total at the Aloha Junior PGA Championship local qualifier at Kauai’s Wailua Golf Course last week. Punahou’s Evan Kawai was the medalist.
