The nonprofit Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center is hosting a free talk June 15 as part of its “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace” Brown Bag Lunch Series.

The talks are from noon-1 p.m. the third Thursdays of each month in the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 655 Kilauea Ave. in Hilo.

This month’s speakers are Dr. Sandra Takamine and Martha Yamada, R.N., on the topic “Bullying in Schools: Let’s Talk About It!”

“One in 10 children is a target of bullying,” Takamine said. “Children who are bullied — whether physical, verbal or psychological — are at a greater risk of suffering from depression and other mental health problems.

“Bullying does not discriminate and it has no financial, cultural, or social boundaries.”

In this talk, learn about this serious community concern and how to help educate and empower keiki to be “bully-proof.”

Takamine is the Hawaii District school psychologist with the Department of Education. Yamada is the state Department of Health’s East Hawaii public health nursing supervisor. Both are members of the Hawaii Island Anti-Bullying Coalition.

Ku‘ikahi’s Brown Bag Lunch Series is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch, enjoy an informal and educational talk-story session.
