One person is dead and two others injured after a one-vehicle traffic collision Sunday night in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

According to a written Fire Department statement, the crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. at the 33-mile marker of Highway 11, south of Volcano village in the Ka‘u District. Arriving responders found a white Toyota pickup truck off the roadway, turned onto the driver’s side.

One individual was dead at the scene, pinned under the wreckage. Another was alive but unable to move, while a third was ambulatory.

The road remainaed open with traffic control.

No other details are available.

The death will not be counted by police toward the island’s official traffic toll, as it occurred inside the national park. It is unofficially the 20th vehicular death of 2017, with 16 counting toward the official total.
