Ten units, including both county helicopters, took part in the rescue of two swimmers in distress near Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach in Ka‘u.

A caller told dispatchers shortly after noon Wednesday the two swimmers and a lifeguard were caught about 100 yards offshore in rough seas, high surf and windy conditions, according to a written Fire Department statement.

Two firefighters swam out to the scene and a helicopter dropped a fire rescue specialist off to assist the lifeguard.

A Billy Pugh net was dropped from Chopper One, and all were safely taxied to shore by the helicopter.
