“HULA PELE” WORKSHOP WITH KUMU AB VALENCIA

Details: In celebration of Hilo’s annual Merrie Monarch festival, kumu Ab Valencia offers this hula workshop series. Valencia will teach a hula that pays homage to Pelehonuamea and her home at Kilauea. Learn basic hula steps and hand motions that tell the story of Pele and appropriate costuming and how to make nalei wehiwehi hula (hula adornments). On the last day of class the haumana (students) will make a traditional hula presentation to Pele at Kilauea. Cost is $200 and includes all plant materials for hula adornments. Details: Join in the celebration of Ka La Hiki Ola — An Extension of Life — as we perpetuate our living culture and storied history. Saturday opens with games, arts and canoe rides. On Sunday there will be games, arts, hukilau and Hawaiian food tasting. This festival provides a time and place where cultural demonstrators and artisans can practice their craft and engage a new generation of practitioners.
