Volcano Art Center presents “An Evening of Hawaiian Language” from 7-9 p.m. Thursday with University of Hawaii at Hilo instructor ‘Alika Guerrero at the center’s Niaulani Campus.

Guerrero will discuss the importance of perpetuating the Hawaiian language and give an overview of “Papa ‘Olelo Hawai‘i,” a series of beginning Hawaiian language classes slated for July at Volcano Art Center.

Thursday’s informative, engaging presentation offers a unique opportunity for the community to learn more about the rich Hawaiian language, and to ask any questions about the upcoming class series. The evening’s theme is “‘O ka ‘Olelo ke Ka‘a o ka Mauli,” translated to “Language is the fiber that binds us to our cultural identity.” Discover how the advocacy of the Hawaiian culture and language benefits all of Hawaii’s people.

The presentation is free but donations are always welcome.

Guerrero has a bachelor of arts in Hawaiian studies, history and anthropology from UH-Hilo and is pursuing his master’s in Hawaiian language and literature. He has taught community Hawaiian language courses for three years.

The evening is part of a once-a-month Thursday night series at the Volcano Art Center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and the environment.

“Papa ‘Olelo Hawai‘i,” taught by Guerrero, will be offered for eight weeks from 6-7:30 p.m. Fridays beginning July 14. The basics class will focus on simple vocabulary, conversation, grammar and sentence structure.

VAC’s Niaulani Campus is at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village. For more information, call 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.
