Ka‘u firefighters battled a pair of brush fires near Naalehu on Tuesday.

Fourteen units responded to a 1:55 p.m. alarm to fight a blaze in a remote area off Kaalaiki Road. After they extinguished the fire and mop-up operations were underway, another fire was detected about a mile below Kaalaiki in a remote gulch above the macadamia nut orchards.

According to a written Fire Department statement, both fires happened within a short time of each other, with “no signs of natural ignition.”

Both fires were extinguished by 5:45 p.m. and each burned about 1/4 acre.
