During the week of April 17-23, police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

During the week of April 17-23, police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 10; Kona, eight; South Kohala, two; and Puna, one.

So far this year, there have been 388 DUI arrests compared with 340 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.1 percent.

There have been 419 major accidents so far this year compared with 463 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.5 percent.

So far this year, there have been seven official traffic fatalities, compared with nine at this time last year, a decrease of 22.2 percent. There also have been three vehicular fatalities that don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the other in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
