The Hawaii Prep junior became a leading contender for the honor Friday when he pitched a three-hit shutout as Ka Makani beat Konawaena 1-0 to open the BIIF D-II semifinal series.

Hurney clinched the accolade Monday.

He couldn’t pitch, but Hurney delivered a 4-for-4 day at the plate and scored twice as HPA won the deciding game of the semifinals 4-2, advancing to the championship for the first time since 2014.
