Police are seeking the public’s assistance to identify a suspect in a theft investigation that occurred last week at the Hilo Wal-Mart store.

On April 7 at about 1:30 p.m., a man used a self-checkout register and requested cash back during the transaction. The man told police he then became distracted and left the cash at the register. A short time later, an unidentified man was seen on surveillance video taking the money left at the register and then leaving without attempting to return the cash to its rightful owner, police said.

The man is described as about 35 to 45 years old, with a dark complexion and medium-to-large build. He was seen wearing a dark blue long sleeve shirt, khaki shorts, black shoes, and a black and white baseball hat.

Anyone who knows the man’s identity or has information about the case is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
