The Coast Guard will allow vessels to enter its safety zone around the lava ocean entry if they meet certain requirements. The temporary restriction put in place March 28 requires boats to stay at least 300 meters from where lava flows into the sea at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The Coast Guard will allow vessels to enter its safety zone around the lava ocean entry if they meet certain requirements. The temporary restriction put in place March 28 requires boats to stay at least 300 meters from where lava flows into the sea at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The Coast Guard says it will review written requests for access.

Factors to be considered for access include material condition of the boat, safety equipment, familiarity with surrounding waters and experience.

Tour groups complained the zone was too restrictive.
