Ex-NFL player takes over HPA

Former NFL player and Hawaii Prep grad Daniel Te’o-Nesheim is taking over Ka Makani’s football program.

The school announced Monday that Jordan Hayslip is stepping down as football coach after eight seasons but will remain as HPA’s baseball coach.

Te’o-Nesheim, a 2005 HPA graduate, has been a football assistant the past two seasons.

“We are excited to have Daniel step up to the head coaching position,” athletic director Stephen Perry said in a release. “His experience at HPA, at the University of Washington, and in the NFL will prove valuable as he leads the team starting next fall.

“His passion for the sport, love of the game, and understanding of the game’s fundamentals will help Daniel energize the boys to get better each and every day.”

Kamehameha downs HPA

Brooke Baptiste pitched a three-inning no-hitter and hit a three-run home run Monday in Waimea as Kamehameha beat Hawaii Prep 21-0 in a BIIF softball game.

Kiana Lincoln hit a grand slam, going 5 for 5 with two doubles to fuel the Warriors (10-4).

Hillary Connors took the loss for Ka Makani (2-10).

Kealakehe 19, Keaau 2

Brittney Keaunui hit a grand slam at the Cougars’ field and Kiara Cantiberos was the winning pitcher for the Waveriders (5-5).

Caitlin Calhoun was the losing pitcher for the Cougars (4-7).

Hilo juniors win at Mauna Lani

Hilo’s Lacey Uchida and Dysen Park won their divisions Sunday at a Hawaii State Junior Golf Association 14-under tour stop at Mauna Lani’s North Course.

Uchida carded a six-stroke victory in girls 13-14, carding an 11-over 155 during two rounds of play.

In boys 11-12, Park pocketed a seven-shot victory, recording a 22-over 166.

Hilo’s Isaiah Kanno was runner-up in boys 13-14. At 12-over, he was two shots ahead of Keaau’s Dillon Ah Chong in third. Ah Chong was coming off a win last weekend on Oahu.

Ronald Nakamura posted the high total Sunday at a Big Island Trap Club shoot at the county shooting range in Hilo.

Club members and Scholastic Clay Target students shot 50 targets in singles, 100 handicap and 50 doubles

HIGA golf tourney

A six-person team golf tournament, sponsored by Hawaii Island Golf Association/Hilo Muni Golf Club, will take place April 30 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

All golfers having current HIGA/Hilo Muni Golf Club handicaps are eligible to enter the competition.

A $120 team entry fee ($20 per person) must be paid in check and turned in with an entry form to the Muni pro shop. The entry deadline for the semi-annual competition is April 25.

The entry fee includes the cost for bento lunch after the tournament but does not include green fees or cart rental. The remainder of the money collected will be distributed as team and individual prizes.

Waiakea seeks soccer coach

Waiakea High School is taking applications for a girls soccer coach.

Applications can be picked up from the Waiakea office during business hours, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

The deadline to apply is April 21.

Hilo High School is accepting applications for the following coaching positions:
