Nine more people recently completed the Basic Shotgun Shooting program jointly presented by On Target Inc., an island-based nonprofit organization, and the county Parks and Recreation Department.

Now in its third year, the course includes classroom instruction and field training in the safe and responsible use of firearms.

To date, 146 students ranging in age from 10-79 completed the class and a follow-up program that provides instruction in the shotgun shooting sports of trap and skeet.

Target shooting is one of the fastest-growing youth participation sports in America, rivaling baseball and soccer.

While not unusual to have a high percentage of family participants, the 12th graduating class to earn NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Certificates was composed entirely of parents and children.

Classes for the 10-hour course are conducted at the Waiakea Recreation Center and the Hilo Trap and Skeet Range. On Target provides firearms, certified volunteer instructors, texts and classroom material. Parks and Recreation schedules and administers the classes, charging a modest fee to cover the cost of targets and ammunition.
