Brendan Hornung was economical. San Jose State, not so much.
Hornung scattered 11 hits to win a complete game with seven strikeouts and Hawaii opened a four-game series with a 6-2 victory in Honolulu.
Hornung (2-2) didn’t walk a batter or allow an extra-base hit, throwing just 88 pitches, and six of the Spartans’ hits came in the fifth and seventh innings. Making his sixth start, the senior right-hander, UH’s opening day starter, lowered his ERA to 1.93.
Adam Fogel collected three hits for the Rainbow Warriors (12-8), doubling in the second and scoring on Rojas’s double for a 2-0 lead. Rojas also had an RBI single in the seventh to extend the lead to 4-2, and Alex Fitchett followed with a two-run double.
San Jose State (9-11) used five pitchers, and they combined to throw 157 pitches.
The teams match up again at 6:35 p.m. Friday.
