Police are investigating an alleged threat Thursday morning that caused Hilo High School to go into lockdown for roughly 30 minutes.

At 9:48 a.m., the campus went into lockdown after becoming “aware of a threat to our school,” said Principal Robert Dircks in a letter to parents Thursday that was posted on Hilo High’s website.

The letter did not give information about the threat or how it was reported, but Samuel Thomas with the Hawaii Police Department said there was a “rumor of a student from another school intending to cause harm to students at Hilo High School.”

Officers from the HPD were called and soon gave the all-clear. The lockdown was lifted at 10:13 a.m.

A state Department of Education spokeswoman said school resumed as normal for the day.
