Pahoa Elementary School third-grader Sofia Venti was awarded a seat to the recent premiere of the film, “Dream Big: Engineering Our World” at the Consolidated Theaters Ward 16 on Oahu.

Sofia was among the winners of the American Society of Civil Engineers Hawaii Section essay contest and attended the single film screening with her parents.

Her essay stated she was one of two girls at a Lego Technics Engineering Camp while visiting her grandparents in Chico, Calif., during the summer where she learned how to build and design houses that won’t break. Her dream job is to become a structural engineer.

“I don’t think there are many girl engineers out there like there should be and I want to change that,” she wrote.

The ASCE Hawaii Section presented the film, aimed at inspiring the next wave of future engineers by celebrating engineering ingenuity. Narrated by Academy Award-winner Jeff Bridges, “Dream Big” showcases engineering marvels from around the world in a visually stunning 3-D format.
