Police arrest 29 for DUI

During the week of Feb. 27-March 5, police arrested 29 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents; one was younger than 21. The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; Puna, eight; South Hilo, five; South Kohala, four; and Ka‘u, one.

So far this year, there have been 239 DUI arrests compared with 200 during the same period last year, an increase of 19.5 percent. There have been 230 major accidents so far this year compared with 245 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.1 percent.

So far this year, there have been four official traffic fatalities, the same number as during the same period last year. There also have been two traffic deaths this year not counted toward the official total because one occurred within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the other on a private road.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
