UCC Ecumenical officer to preach at Hilo Coast UCC

The Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson will preach Sunday (March 5) at Hilo Coast UCC, the first Sunday in Lent. Her sermon, “First Encounters on the Journey,” is based on Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7.

Thompson serves as the minister for ecumenical and interfaith relations, representing the Office of the General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ.

She is an inspiring preacher and teacher, sharing her skills and gifts nationally and abroad.

Historic church celebrates heritage with several events

As part of the Christ Church Episcopal 150th anniversary celebration, two days of events are planned.

A one-woman play about Queen Emma, “Vespers at Hanaiakamalama,” written by Jackie Pualani Johnson, professor of drama at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday (March 4) at the church located at 81-1004 Konawaena School Road in Kealakekua. Denyse Woo-Ockerman will play the monarch in the church where the queen herself worshipped.

A photography exhibit of prints made from glass plates used by the second vicar, Samuel H. Davis who came to Kona in 1872, will be on display from 3-4:30 p.m. Saturday and noon-2 p.m. Sunday (March 5) in the Queen Emma Center. 

The Aloha Quilters of Kailua-Kona also will have a quilt show this weekend at the church. 

Guest speaker for the 10 a.m. Sunday service will be the Rev. Dr. Shannon Clarkson, theologian and niece of the Rev. Shannon Walker of Christ Church and the Kona Ecumenical Project.

All events are free and open to the public.

Turkey dinner plate fundraiser planned at Waiohinu church

Kauaha‘ao Congregational Church in Waiohinu, Ka‘u, is having a turkey dinner fundraiser from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 28.

Plates can be taken out or eaten at the church hall, and there will be live entertainment.

Plates are $7 each or four plates for $25 and will include kalua turkey, rice or mashed potatoes, butter corn and cake.

Pre-sale tickets are available by calling 929-9997 or from church members.

Dinner plates also can be purchased during the event.
