‘Big Dog’ scholarships

The Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph scholarship committee will be giving $6,000 to graduating seniors in recognition of their participation in a BIIF cross-country or track and field program.

The committee will select six recipients for $1,000 college scholarships.

The purpose of the scholarship is to financially assist qualified student-athletes to pursue their goals of higher education and to ultimately make a positive contribution to our island community.

Soccer referee class March 19

Hilo AYSO Region 274 will hold a basic soccer referee class for all interested in understanding the rules of soccer March 19 at Amauulu Field from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The class is free and open to all with lunch provided.

Instructors Troy Keolanui and Greg Scott will cover the rules of the game, mechanics, and game control.

Registration deadline is March 10. Participants should bring comfortable clothes for on-field work.

AYSO coaching class in March

An intermediate soccer coaching class, sponsored by Hilo AYSO Region 274, is scheduled for March 4 and 5. The course is free and open to all.

The class will be run by Don and Joy Memmer and assisted by Troy Keolanui.

The instructors have a combined 75 years of experience coaching youth ages 4-19.

The two-day course will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Saturday, March 4 session will be held at the Wainaku Executive Center while March 5 will be a field session at Amaulu Field.

Participants should wear appropriate outdoor practice clothes and bring soccer shoes. Shin guards are recommended as well as note-taking materials and a soccer ball.

Waikaumalo run on Feb. 26
