During the week of Feb. 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

During the week of Feb. 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, six; Kona, four; South Hilo, three; and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 148 DUI arrests compared to 120 during the same period last year, an increase of 23.3 percent.

There have been 162 major accidents so far this year compared to 159 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been four official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island, compared to one fatality during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 300 percent for fatalities.

Two additional traffic fatalities in 2017 don’t count toward the official total — one, because it occurred in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the other, because it was on a private road.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
