A cooking fire caused an estimated $80,000 in damage Thursday evening to a two-bedroom duplex on Royal Poinciana Way in Kailua-Kona.

A cooking fire caused an estimated $80,000 in damage Thursday evening to a two-bedroom duplex on Royal Poinciana Way in Kailua-Kona.

Eight units responded to the 7:07 p.m. alarm with the first unit arriving at 7:20 p.m.

The two occupants were evacuated but a cat was found dead in the back bedroom.

Fire personnel were able to keep the fire contained to the kitchen and living room, with heavy smoke damage throughout the house. Most of the contents were destroyed but there was little structure damage.

The occupants were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
