The skinny: Hawaii features one of the top defenses in the Big West, leading the conference in 3-point field goal percentage defense (27.8 percent), ranking second in the league in field goal percentage defense (38.2 percent), and fourth in scoring defense (64.6 points per game). …

However, the Hawaii offense, averages 55.9 points per game while shooting 34.7 percent from the field, both league-lows. …

The skinny: Hawaii improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2003 Wednesday, with Stijn van Tilburg posting a match-high 15 kills on .333 hitting.

Golf

The skinny: Former University of Hawaii golfers Jared Sawada and Kevin Hayashi will compete in the Sony Open, which starts Thursday at Waialae Country Club on Oahu. …

Sawada secured a Monday qualifier spot with a 67 at Ewa Beach, while Hayashi won the Aloha Section PGA Professional Championship in September.

Hilo’s Hayashi will make his 11th Hawaiian Open/Sony Open appearance and first Sony since 2010, which he finished in 80th place at 6-over 216. The eight-time Aloha Section PGA Player of the Year competed at UH from 1983-84.

In September, Hayashi shot a two-day 138 (66-72) at the Wailea Golf Course on Maui. His win also secured a spot at the 50th PGA Professional Championship in June.
