Another crew will live in isolation in a dome on the flank of Mauna Loa starting later this month as a NASA-funded Mars mission simulation enters another phase.
The latest Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation crew will consist of six members who will live in the dome for eight months. They are only allowed to venture outside in spacesuits.
Their simulated mission begins Jan. 19.
HI-SEAS, which is operated by the University of Hawaii at Manoa, has gone through four other simulations, including a yearlong mission that ended last August.
The latest simulation will focus on human behavior and performance, UH-Manoa said.
