Wheelchair path being built at park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park announced that the picnic area near Kipukapuaulu on Mauna Loa Road is temporarily closed while workers install a wheelchair-accessible path from the parking lot to the picnic and shelter area.

The work should be complete Friday, barring any unforeseen circumstances such as weather delays.

The park regrets any inconvenience the closure might cause. Mauna Loa Road, Kipukapuaulu and the Tree Molds will remain open.

9,400 shoe boxes with gifts collected

Hilo residents and people from the surrounding area helped set a record-breaking collection of more than 9,400 gift-filled shoe boxes for children in need during National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child, the organization reports.

The collection ended Nov. 21.

“This year’s gift collection from Hilo-area is an increase over last year’s collection of 8,393 gifts,” Operation Christmas Child said in a statement.

Operation Christmas Child thanks the community for the gift donations that are on their way to children in need worldwide.
