The state Department of Health will conduct a public hearing today regarding changes to Hawaii’s food safety code.

The state Department of Health will conduct a public hearing today regarding changes to Hawaii’s food safety code.

The hearing is from 2-5 p.m. in the Environmental Health Building conference room at 1582 Kamehameha Ave.

Proposed changes to the code include:

• Establishing a food safety education program that would require at least one food establishment employee per work shift to be certified at the Food Handlers Training level.

• Adopting the 2013 U.S. Food and Drug Administration Model Food Code.

• Establishing a new fee structure for Temporary Food Establishment Permits.

• Streamlining regulations for food trucks.

• Removing the 20 days of sale limit for homemade foods not considered a potential public health risk.
