The state Department of Education this week released its revisions to a plan aimed at improving Hawaii’s public school system.

The multi-year Joint Strategic Plan outlines goals to help Hawaii students better succeed. The plan was last updated in 2012. It’s now under review for 2017-20.

The DOE spent eight months drafting revisions. It hosted several community meetings throughout the state earlier this year, including at least two on Hawaii Island, to gather feedback.

The plan has three goals, according to a DOE news release: student success, staff success and successful systems of support — meaning the “system and culture of public education work to effectively organize financial, human and community resources” to support student success.

The plan outlines 10 objectives, including securing adequate resources to support local plans for success, increasing efficiency and transparency of instruction and ensuring all students are offered a “rigorous, well-rounded education.”

The plan is awaiting a stamp of approval Tuesday from the state Board of Education. Should that happen, the revised plan will be implemented in the 2017-18 school year.
