A pre-owned car dealership flooded earlier this year by heavy rain says it’s pleased with a decision to relocate from its Kamehameha Avenue location, particularly given flooding in that same area Friday.

Bayfront Motors, renamed 1260 Auto Group, lost about half its inventory in early October after more than 2 feet of water flooded the Bayfront soccer fields and surrounding area. The business discarded all damaged cars and has been closed since.

Several roads, including part of Bayfront Highway, were closed Friday — again because of flooding. Some areas of East Hawaii received more than 5 inches of rain Thursday and Friday, and weather officials predicted more heavy rainfall in some areas throughout the weekend.

“From a business standpoint, we are glad we don’t have to worry about flooding anymore,” 1260 Auto Group general manager Patrick Ehrenlechner said Friday. “But the flooding is still bad down there.”

The car dealership plans to reopen at a new location at 1260 Kilauea Ave. and is waiting for final approval to transfer its business license. Ehrenlechner hopes to open “very, very soon.” Cars are in storage or parked at the new location, he added.
