Two people are dead following a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in North Kona.

Responding to a 12:34 p.m. alarm, fire rescue personnel arrived at the scene on Mamalahoa Highway just south of the entrance to Makalei Golf Course to find a sports-utility vehicle and dump truck on the side of the roadway. Two people inside the SUV were dead upon their arrival.

The dump truck had a full load and had T-boned the SUV, the Hawaii Fire Department said.

The driver of the dump truck was transported to Kona Community Hospital.

The highway remained closed, at last report.

Waimea-bound traffic is being re-routed down Kaiminani Drive on the south side of the closure, on the north side, traffic will be re-routed toward Waimea on Route 190 and from the Daniel K. Inouye Highway. The expected time of this closure will be approximately four hours.
