UH-Hilo graduate receives Fulbright

A recent graduate of the University of Hawaii at Hilo was awarded the 2016-17 J. William Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Award to teach English to seventh- to ninth-grade students at Bongseon Middle School, located in Gwangju, South Korea.

Chelsea Sato graduated from UH-Hilo in spring 2016 with bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and mathematics, along with certificates in global engagement and mathematics STEM research honors. Sato was a Chancellor’s Scholarship recipient who studied abroad at Korea University in 2013.

Film explores life of jazz legend

Hilo Missionary Church is hosting a free screening of the music documentary film “Night Bird Song: The Incandescent Life of Thomas Chapin” at 7 p.m. today at the church, 1044 Komohana St.

The film, directed by Stephanie Castillo of Kauai, tells the passionate story of the life of jazz legend Chapin.

Castillo will attend the screening and discuss the making of the film that has been screened at festivals around the world.

Banyan Drive art exhibit entries due

The deadline to submit entries for the Banyan Drive Art Stroll, a juried art exhibit, is 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Banyan Drive Art Stroll theme is “Celebrating Lili‘uokalani — the Queen and Her Legacy.” Works in any media will be considered. A PDF entry form is available from Jelena Clay at Banyan Gallery.

The event is slated for Jan. 14, 2017. The Banyan Drive Art Stroll will include plein air painting demonstrations in Lili‘uokalani Gardens, a gyotaku demonstration at Suisan and art exhibits with a popular vote for prizes at Banyan Gallery, the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and Grand Naniloa Hotel.
