Too many fouls, too little time.
That sums off the first loss of the season Saturday for the UH-Hilo men’s basketball team.
Parker Farris scored a game-high 27 points, but he missed a key stretch of the second half and the Vulcans succumbed to Seattle Pacific 88-80 at the Sodexo Collegiate Classic at Brougham Pavilion in Seattle.
Joe Rasmussen’s 3-pointer with 29 seconds left finally put the Falcons (2-0) in the clear.
Seattle Pacific, ranked No. 10 in the west region preseason poll, outrebounded the Vulcans (1-1) 47-31.
UH-Hilo was once again led by Farris and Darius Johnson-Wilson (21 points, nine rebounds).
Farris, a senior guard, picked up his fourth foul with 17:51 remaining as UH-Hilo nursed a three-point lead. He missed more than nine minutes as Seattle Pacific went on a 15-5 run.
Farris provided instant offense when he returned, hitting three consecutive baskets, and Ryley Callaghan’s 3-pointer brought UH-Hilo within 72-69. The Vulcans twice got within a point before Rasmussen’s 3-pointer gave the Falcons an 83-77 advantage.
Hilo High graduate Randan Berinobis also scored in double figures, tallying 10 points with five rebounds before fouling out. Callaghan added seven points and six assists.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Coleman Wooten registered his second straight double-double with a 19 point and 12 rebounds for Seattle Pacific.
Farris (59 points in two games) and Johnson-Wilson made the all-tournament team for the Vulcans, who wrap up their road trip Tuesday at St. Martins in Lacey, Wash.
