Regional Science Olympiad set

The University of Hawaii at Hilo invites all Hawaii Island middle and high schools to register for the 2017 Regional Science Olympiad Tournament scheduled for Feb. 4 on the UH-Hilo campus.

The top teams from the regional competition will qualify for the state tournament in March on Oahu.

Science Olympiad tournaments encourage teamwork while strengthening participant abilities in science, technology, engineering and math. The 2017 regional competition will include a broad range of events to test participants’ understanding in natural sciences areas such as invasive species, geology, meteorology and chemistry.

Ecosolutions class offered at UH-Hilo

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo is offering EcoSolutions to Garden Pests and Diseases with Zach Mermel from 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 22 at UH-Hilo’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management Building, Room 102.

The cost is $35. Participants will explore a variety of hands-on strategies for reducing fertilizer and irrigation costs while maximizing the overall health of their garden ecosystem, and also create a few environmentally friendly garden formulations.

Three Hawaii Prep seniors honored

Hawaii Preparatory Academy seniors Sarah Emmons, Seungyou Kim and Sidney Vermeulen were named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Martin Ferrell, HPA’s dean of academics, made the announcement.

The students will receive a letter of commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corp., which conducts the program.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being honored for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
