A tradition continues Saturday in Hilo with the annual St. Joseph School Country Fair, featuring an array of activities, food booths, live entertainment and great prizes.
The fair takes place from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the St. Joseph School gym and grounds, 1000 Ululani St. The country fair is the school’s biggest fundraising event and proceeds benefit its tuition assistance program.
“What’s extra special about this year’s fair are the grand prize giveaways,” said Fayth Paekukui, country fair committee chairwoman.
Paekukui said fairgoers can enter to win a two-night stay at the Hilton Waikoloa including a luau; a two-night stay at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows; a one-night stay at the Kilauea Lodge; a 50-inch television; and other prizes that will be awarded throughout the day.
There also will be carnival-style games, outdoor activities, baked goods, plants and produce, and a variety of local and international food. The fair wouldn’t be complete without fresh hot malassadas. The sugar-coated confection traditionally sold at the fair is highly sought after and enjoyed by many.
The Hawaii Police Department reminds the community that a temporary one-way traffic pattern will be in effect along a portion of Kapiolani Street on Saturday to accommodate the fair. Between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., traffic will flow in the Puna direction only on Kapiolani Street between Hualalai and Wailoa streets.
