During the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

During the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Puna, six; South Hilo, three; Hamakua and North Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 818 DUI arrests compared to 791 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.4 percent.

There have been 1,039 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,160 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been 22 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 15 official fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 46.7 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
