Big Island writing teacher and award-winning novelist Tom Peek is hosting a workshop, “Writing on the Wild Side,” from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 8 at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

Hone your writing skills, explore your creative mind and discover your unique voice in this new writing workshop. Social media correspondents, bloggers, storytellers, journal writers and poets might find Peek’s stimulating techniques and exercises empowering.

“Being yourself on paper might be one of the hardest things to do for a writer,” said Peek, who will put an emphasis on knowledge writers can use in everyday social media sharing, including journaling and blogging. “I want to help writers create prose that people actually want to read.”

Putting thoughts into words has never been more prevalent than in today’s electronic communications, Peek said.

“Facebook, Twitter, not to mention blogs and websites are all waiting for you to release your expressive potential,” he said.

The workshop is open to all levels and genres. No writing experience is necessary. The class fee is $75 or $65 for VAC members.

Peek has taught workshops since 1991. A writer for more than three decades, his work includes an award-winning novel, newspaper stories and commentaries, university publications, magazine articles, national park exhibits and award-winning video productions.
