A bottled gas truck overturned at about 3 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 19 by Alae Cemetery on the northern outskirts of Hilo.

The truck’s cargo was strewn over both sides of the highway and traffic was backed up in both directions.

An ambulance and hazardous materials team were among the responders to the scene, but it did not appear any of the gas canisters had ruptured. The driver was taken to Hilo Medical Center. His condition was unknown.

Police say one lane of traffic was re-opened at 4:03 p.m. The road was re-opened to two-way traffic shortly before 5 p.m.
