Cary Deringer, a member of Hilo Toastmasters, will represent Big Island Toastmasters at the fall Division C Humorous Speech Contest on Oct. 8 in Honolulu.
Competing against contestants from Waimea and Kona Toast-masters clubs, Deringer won first place at the Area 12 Speech Contest on Sept. 24 at the W.M. Keck Observatory Headquarters in Waimea. The title of her speech is “The Perils of Parallel Parking,” a humorous five- to seven-minute discussion about how to parallel park and what that means for all of us learning a new activity.
Deringer will face off against six to eight other area contest winners on Oahu.
“Cary is an energetic, entertaining speaker,” says Toastmasters teammate Joann McCabe. “We know she will represent our Hilo club and the Big Island with style.”
“Speech contests are an exciting part of the Toastmasters communication and leadership program,“ said Ray Domire, president of Hilo Toastmasters. “They challenge members to fine-tune their skills in front of a larger audience. In a club, members are evaluated; in a contest, they are judged against their peers.”
