A 21-year-old man survived a 25-foot fall while rappelling down a 135-foot waterfall on the Hilo side of Maulua Gulch, north of Hilo.

A 21-year-old man survived a 25-foot fall while rappelling down a 135-foot waterfall on the Hilo side of Maulua Gulch, north of Hilo.

According to a written Fire Department statement, 14 fire units, including both county helicopters, responded to an 11:03 a.m. call for rescue at the waterfall on Makahiloa Stream.

The man was extricated by helicopter and taken to Hilo Medical Center by ambulance in stable condition with a leg injury.
