Hawaii Island Adult Care participant Sarah Ching celebrated her 100th birthday at the center Tuesday by doing ceramics with art therapist Lori Thal and tai chi with instructor Faith LeLievre.

Ching, who turned 100 today, was born and raised on Oahu but moved to the Big Island four years ago to live with her daughter. She worked as a pantry chef at the Arcadia and the Moana hotels on Oahu, attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa in her 60s and served as president of several senior center groups.

She credits her longevity in large part to tai chi and ceramics, which she has enjoyed for the past 40 years.
