“Embrace Change: New Vision (Create Engagement)” is the theme for the 62nd annual Hawaii Island United Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association Convention from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 17 at Sangha Hall in Hilo.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The event is primarily for Hawaii Island BWA members to get together and receive information about their united organization.

Irene Nakamoto, president of the Hawaii Federation BWA, will be the convention’s guest speaker.

After a long career as an educator and principal, including time at Kohala High and Elementary School, she retired and worked at the Honpa Hongwanji Office of Buddhist Education. Thereafter, she became a caregiver until her mother’s passing.

Nakamoto keeps busy as an Ohara School of Ikebana instructor, intergenerational program co-facilitator at Jikoen Hongwanji, program committee for the Betsuin’s BWA and is the president of the Federation of Buddhist Women’s Associations. She is married to the Rev. David Nakamoto of Kailua Hongwanji.

Convention committee members are working diligently to present a day of inspiration, warm fellowship, one-of-a-kind entertainment and, of course, delicious snacks and lunch.

Registration fee is $20 per person. To register and for more information, call 961-6677.
