During the week of Aug. 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 11 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

During the week of Aug. 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 11 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, five.

• South Hilo, four.

• Puna and North Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 668 DUI arrests compared to 661 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.1 percent.

There have been 897 major accidents so far this year compared to 976 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.1 percent.

So far this year, there have been 13 official fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 15 official fatalities, compared with 12 official fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 15 official fatalities during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
