“There is a lot of moisture that is lingering around us,” said Leigh Anne Eaton, National Weather Service meteorologist.
She said a surface trough of low pressure south of the island is aiding air instability and the creation of thunderstorms.
Police advised motorists to use caution on Saddle Road near mile markers 10 and 11 due to debris on the roadway as a result of heavy rain.
Eaton said thunderstorms are still possible today on windward and leeward areas.
Heavy showers are expected to dissipate by Thursday with the return of normal tradewind weather patterns.
Hilo saw the most rainfall so far this week.
As of 8 a.m., the 24-hour rain totals were 8.61 inches at Hilo International Airport.
Mountain View saw 4.45 inches and Hakalau received 3.38 inches.
