Hospice of Hilo will be offering a free, six-week adult grief support group called “The Healing Journey” from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays starting Aug. 31 at the hospice complex, 1011 Waianuenue Ave.

Meeting times are subject to change and there is no charge for the class.

“To be alive is to experience loss and as a result of these losses we grieve,” said Hospice of Hilo community bereavement counselor Cathy Hough. “The journey of grief is hard work and is often eased by the support of others.”

Hough said the class will combine group support, education and the development of coping skills in a safe and confidential setting, and she asks for a commitment to attend the entire six weeks.

“The smallness of the class and the structure, along with tools such as positive reading material to study at home, exercises to develop methods to help ‘ride’ the grief out, and specific ceremonies helped me to be in a healthier place on this path,” said Mary Sue Green, a former participant.

Besides the free community bereavement support, Hospice of Hilo has assisted individuals and their loved ones to live better during their time of need through its ongoing home care program since 1983 and with inpatient services since 2012 at the Pohai Malama a Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Care Center.
