Hilo’s Shaun Downie won a qualifier for the U.S. Mid-Amateur on Monday, carding a 2-under 70 at Big Island Country Club.

Sinking five birdies against just one double-bogey, Downie was the only player in the field of 13 to beat par.

Waikoloa’s Richard Gillette was three shots behind in second, Burt Bonk of Waimea carded a 74, and Hilo’s Chris Igawa came in at 75.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur is in September in Pennsylvania.

• Waiakea graduate Britney Yada finished tied for 48th on Sunday at the Symetra Tour’s Decatur-Forsyth Classic in Illinois.

Yada finished at even-par 216, winning $606. She was coming off a victory on the Cactus Tour, where she held off fellow Hilo native Kimberly Kim for a one-shot victory.
