Hilo’s Hayashi fails to make U.S. Senior cut

Kevin Hayashi shot a 13-over 83 and missed the cut Friday at the U.S. Senior Open at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.

The cut was 7-over, and Hayashi finished with a 21-over 78-83—161 total.

Big Island Sports Academy free clinic

The Big Island Sports Academy will hold a free basketball clinic for boys and girls ages 12 to 18 on Friday, Aug. 19 at Kailua-Kona and Hilo.

The morning clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Old Airport Park Gym I Kailua-Kona. The afternoon clinic will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Panaewa Gym. Registration is a half-hour before each clinic.

The clinic will be led by Bill Trumbo, the former UH-Hilo and Konawaena athletic director and college basketball coach.

Sign-ups for Pahoa youth baseball team

Sign-ups are being held for a new Pahoa youth baseball team for ages 8 to 10 years old. Experience is preferred but not necessary.

Pickleball play being held in Hilo

Jan Bumatay is trying to build pickleball, a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis.

She has a group of 6 to 10 people who play at 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays down by Railroad Avenue. The group is hoping to get support from the country to play indoors.
