Police have identified a man who drowned Wednesday afternoon in the Wailuku River above Hilo as 41-year-old Alejandro Barrios Sr. of Orange, Calif.

Police have identified a man who drowned Wednesday afternoon in the Wailuku River above Hilo as 41-year-old Alejandro Barrios Sr. of Orange, Calif.

According to a Fire Department statement, Barrios was with family members at a spot called Narnia on the upper reaches of the Wailuku in Piihonua. Witnesses told would-be rescuers Barrios jumped into the water and had difficulty swimming. Family members jumped in trying to save him, but were unsuccessful.

His body was found by rescue divers on the bottom of the river, about 30 feet down.
